Piraeus-Perama History

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

The Piraeus-Perama {Πειραιάς-Πέραμα} tram, begins its operation in 1936 [The Beginning], and its main objective is the transportation to and from the Salamina {Σαλαμίνα} navy yard. Perama is still a rural area and Egaleo {Αιγάλεω} mountain is covered with pine trees.

The tram was operated by the Hellenic Electric Railways company {Ελληνικοί Ηλεκτρικοί Σιδηρόδρομοι}.

On April 4th, 1977, Holy Monday, the last tram is removed from the line, the one which services the "Piraeus-Perama" line [The End]. Its operation had already been discontinued 12 days ago, but it was resumed due to a bus strike. The tram was welcomed in Keratsini {Κερατσίνι} [Place Names], from people who were holding flowers and with tears and cries they protested against its removal.
