Nikiforos Litras (1832-1904)
Nikiforos Litras {Νικηφόρος Λύτρας} (1832-1904). Artist. Nikiforos Litras was a member of the Academy and taught at the School of Fine Arts for 37 years. Regarded as one of the most renowned modern Greek artists of the 19th century together with Nikolaos Gizis [People], the foremost figure of modern Greek art. He was born in the village of Pirgos {Πύργος} on Tinos {Τήνος}.
Nikiforos Litras first studied art at the Athens [Place Names] School of Fine Arts whose Director, Mr. Thirsios {Θείρσιος}, noted his talent and gave him particular care and attention. Together they decorated the Russian Orthodox Church in Athens at Filellinon {Φιλελλήνων} [Philhellenes] street. His artistic output is most significant.
His paintings are admired for their symmetrγ, for the delicacy and harmony of their colours, for their restrained style and the dignified tranquility of their forms. Their subject matter is taken from mythology, Greek history, and social and religious life. The scenes of family life and paintings of children are particularly appealing.
Litras was appointed professor at the School of Fine Arts and taught there for about 37 years.
