Aleksis Minotis (1900-1990)

Aleksis Minotakis (Minotis) {Αλέξης Μινωτάκης (Μινωτής)} (1900-1990). A top-ranking actor and director of the Greek stage, Aleksis Minotis made his first appearance on stage in Chania {Χανιά}, Crete {Κρήτη}, in 1921 as Leader {Korifeos ~ Κορυφαίος} and then as the Messenger {Eksangkelos ~ Εξάγγελος} in Sophocles' {Σοφοκλής} "Oedipus Rex" {Idipous Tirannos ~ Οιδίπους Τύραννος} with Emilios Veakis [People].

From 1925 to 1930 he worked with Marika Kotopouli [People]. In 1960-1961 he directed the operas "Norma" by Bellini and "Medea" {Midia ~ Μήδεια} by Cherubini at Epidaurus {Epidavros ~ Επίδαυρος} with the great Greek soprano Maria Callas. He also directed Medea at the Teatro alla Scala, in Milan, and the Opera House in Dallas, Texas.

Some of the highlights of his successful career were "The Merchant of Venice", "King Lear", "Macbeth", "Hamlet", and Ibsen's "Ghosts". He also directed ancient tragedies ("Hecuba" {Ekavi ~ Εκάβη}, "Antigone" {Andigoni ~ Αντιγόνη}, "Prometheus Bound" {Promithefs Dezmotis ~ Προμηθεύς Δεσμώτης}, "Oedipus at Colonos" {Idipous Epi Kolono ~ Οιδίπους επί Κολωνώ}). As a director he tried to be true to the playwright and convey the playwright's message.

His contribution to the interpretation of ancient tragedy has been fundamental. He did not employ external technical means and complicated machinery to impress, but founded his performances on the Word.
