Greek War Of Independence (1821-1829)
Ioannis Makrigiannis (1797-1880)
Ioannis Triandafillodimitris (Makrigiannis) {Ιωάννης Τριανταφυλλοδημήτρης (Μακρυγιάννης)} (1797-1880) [50 Drachmas]. Army General of the 1821 Greek War of Independence against Ottoman rule. Ioannis Makrigiannis joined the Society Of Friends [The Society] in 1820 αnd dedicated himself to the Cause from that point on.
He fought in a lot of battles and sided with the Parliamentarians during the Civil Wars [Civil Wars]. He invaded the Peloponnese {Peloponnisos ~ Πελοπόννησος} and stayed there to organize the defence against Ibrahim Paşa. He was wounded three times while heroically defending the Acropolis {Ακρόπολις}. His revolutionary activities culminated in his involvement in the Piraeus {Pireefs ~ Πειραιεύς} operations in 1827.
When Kapodistrias [People] came to Greece, he was appointed "General Leader of Sparta" {Genikos Arhigos Spartis ~ Γενικός Αρχηγός Σπάρτης}. He was unhappy with the lack of activity the position offered and started to write his "Memoirs" (1829). He greeted the arrival of King Otto [People] warmly but soon became disillusioned and turned to the cultivation of the earth.
In 1837, when he was a councillor, he persuaded the Athens [Place Names] City Council to submit a report to King Otto concerning the granting of a Constitution. This act led to his dismissal, to the dissolution of the City Council and to his being placed under house arrest. The palace regarded him as the prime mover behind the activities that led to the Rebellion of September 3rd [Place Names], 1843. In March 1853 Makrigiannis was court-martialled for high treason, convicted and sentenced to death. He was later released when Dimitrios Kallergis {Δημήτριος Καλλέργης} intervened on his behalf.
Following the expulsion of King Otto he was re-invested with the title of Lieutenant-General (1864).
