RIGAS FEREOS-VELESTINLIS (1757-1798) {ΡΗΓΑΣ ΦΕΡΑΙΟΣ-ΒΕΛΕΣΤΙΝΛΗΣ} [People] National martyr and forerunner of the 1821 Greek War of Independence against Ottoman rule. He was an eminent pioneer of the Greek Enlightment and the writer of a great rousing poem called "Thourios" {Battle Song ~ Θούριος}, which is also known as "O Thourios Tou Riga" {Rigas' Battle Song ~ Ο Θούριος Του Ρήγα}. |

DIONISIOS SOLOMOS (1798-1857) {ΔΙΟΝΥΣΙΟΣ ΣΟΛΩΜΟΣ} [People] [Georgios I] The Poet Laureate of Greece. In just one month, May of 1823, he wrote Greece's National Anthem, that is "Hymn To Liberty" {Imnos Is Tin Eleftherian ~ Ύμνος Εις Tην Ελευθερίαν} [The Hymn], which consists of 158 strophes. |
