Dionisios

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

Dionisios {Διονύσιος}. Greek Orthodox Bishop of Triki {Τρίκη} (Trikala {Τρίκαλα}). In 1601 he incited the people to rebel against Ottoman rule and liberate the country, but he was unsuccessful. He was defrocked and subsequently called Skilosofos {Σκυλόσοφος} or Kakodionisios {Κακοδιονύσιος}.

Later on he contacted members of the clergy in other Balkan countries, held a meeting and made ready for a more generalised uprising. This uprising took place on the instigation of Charles, Duke of Nevers (France) who claimed to be a descendant of the Paleologi [Byzantine Emperors] and was gathering forces to take Constantinople {Konstandinoupolis ~ Κωνσταντινούπολις} from the Ottomans.

Charles had entered a secret agreement with Dionisios to support his activities by starting a local uprising. In spite of the fact that Charles did not take any action, on the night of September 10th, 1611, Dionisios atacked Ioannina {Ιωάννινα} with 800 villagers from Souli {Σούλι} and Thesprotia {Θεσπρωτία}. He burnt the house of the Ottoman Governor and slaughtered a large number of Ottomans, but he did not manage to carry the day.

The Ottomans arrested him and skinned him alive.
