The Tram

Samos History

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

The tram was horse driven and operated in Karlovasi, the most important financial center of the island [Images], where, at the beginning of the 20th century, there were 50 tan-yards which employed 1,200 workers, in a population of 10,000 inhabitants.

It linked Neo Karlovasi {Νέο Καρλόβασι} with the port of the city and it was inaugurated in 1905. At the beginning it operated under Italian ownership and then under Greek ownership.

When abolished in 1940, it was one of the last horse driven fixed route means of transportation which had remained in the world.
