The Tram

"Cowboy" History

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

The tram which serviced the line "Customs House-SAP Station-Larissa Station" {Τελωνείον-Σταθμός ΣΑΠ-Σταθμός Λαρίσσης}, (later changed to "Customs House-EIS Station-Larissa Station" {Τελωνείον-Σταθμός ΕΗΣ-Σταθμός Λαρίσσης}), was known as "Cowboy" [The Tram]. The inhabitants of Piraeus named it thus because its movement was wobbly, reminiscent of a horse rider in the Wild West.

It was also called Melina's tram (from the long-time now deceased Melina Merkouri {Μελίνα Μερκούρη}), because it was used in the film "Never on Sundays" {Ποτέ Την Κυριακή}.

It was constructed by the English company Dick Kerr Works and it was operated by "Athens Piraeus Railways" {Σιδηρόδρομοι Αθηνών Πειραιώς}.

Its operation was discontinued on November 14th, 1960, when it was replaced by the green buses [The End].
