The Tram

Volos History

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

The steam driven tram, started operating at the end of the 19th century, as an extension of the small train which serviced Pilio {Πήλιο}. It covered the distance from Volos {Βόλος} to Anavros {Άναυρος} in 20 minutes and it was operated by the Thessalic Railways {Σιδηρόδρομοι Θεσσαλίας}.

In 1933, it was discontinued as it was considered unprofitable after a positive magisterial decision for the company which, contrary to the government, supported that it could go ahead with discontinuing the service.

The line operated again for a short period during the Nazi German occupation [Contents], when there was a shortage of fuel, and one more time, in 1950.
