Angkelos Sikelianos (1884-1952)

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

Angkelos Sikelianos {Άγγελος Σικελιανός} (1884-1952) [Kostis Palamas]. Born in Lefkas {Λευκάς}, Angkelos Sikelianos is one of the greatest, modern Greek, lyrical poets. He had ample means and was therefore able to spend his time studying, writing and travelling.

He and his American wife, Eve, conceived the plan for the revival of the "Delphi Amphictyony" {Delfiki Amfiktionia ~ Δελφική Αμφικτυονία}. In 1927 and 1930 they organized the "Delphi Festival" {Delfikes Eortes ~ Δελφικές Εορτές} at their own expense. The festival included performances of ancient tragedies, games and folk exhibitions and drew a great many people.

At that time, and for many years to follow, Sikelianos' poetic genius took its subject matter from the world of ancient Greece; from its mythology and mysticism, religion and history. Sikelianos' poetical works dating from the time when the first signs of the Second World War [Contents] started to appear on the horizon are particularly praiseworthy. This was the time when his poetry took on a social aspect.
