Philhellenes (1821-1829)
Santarosa (1783-1825)
Conte (di Santarosa) Santorre Annibale De Rosi di Pomarolo (1783-1825). Italian rebel and man of letters, Santarosa played a leading role in the Piemonte liberation movement (1821) and was one of the most significant philhellenes.
After the failure of the Piemonte uprising, Santarosa sought refuge in Paris and later went to London. His philhellinism led to his decision to come to Greece and he arrived in Nafplion {Ναύπλιον} in December 1824.
The Greek government greeted him with caution, not wanting to create the impression in the Europe of Fürst Clemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar von Metternich (1773-1858, Austrian Politician and Foreign Minister) that the Greek Cause was in any way bound up with the insurgence in Italy.
In 1825 Santarosa followed Aleksandros Mavrokordatos [People] and Georgios Koundouriotis [People] to Messinia {Μεσσηνία}. Immediately after this he was called upon to reinforce Sfaktiria {Σφακτηρία} where he met his death on April 29th, during an attack of the Egyptian forces.
