Hristos Kapsalis (1751-1826)
Hristos Kapsalis {Χρήστος Καψάλης} (1751-1826). Hristos Kapsalis was Procrite (community lord under Ottoman occupation) of Mesolongki {Μεσολόγγι} and spent his entire fortune on helping the Cause succeed in its aims.
On the evening of the heroic 'Exodus' he blew up the powder store where the sick, the women and children had sought refuge. Approximately 100 Ottomans and Albanians, whom he had enticed to the store, were blown up with them.
The self-sacrifice at Mesolongki aroused feelings all over Europe and strengthed the tide of Philhellenism [Philhellenes].
