According to Homer {Omiros ~ Όμηρος}, the warriors of his time who came from Macedonia {Makedonia ~ Μακεδονία} were called "Paeonians" {Peones ~ Παίονες} and their land was called "Paeonia" {Peonia ~ Παιονία}. It was Herodotus {Irodotos ~ Ηρόδοτος} (Herodotus of Halicarnassus {Alikarnasos ~ Αλικαρνασός}: Greek historian who lived around 485-420 B.C.) who first called the land "Macedonia". The names "Macedon" {Makedon ~ Μακεδών} and "Macedonia", as well as the words "Macednus" {Makednos ~ Μακεδνός} and "Macedanus" {Makedanos ~ Μακεδανός}, which describe the tall people who lived in the mountains, originate from the Doric root "mak" (length). According to Herodotus, the Dorians where the ancestors of the Macedonias and especially a Doric tribe known by the name of "Macednon Nation" {Makednon Ethnos ~ Μακεδνόν Έθνος}, who had settled at the foot of Pindos {Πίνδος} [World War II] mountain. Macednus, primogenitor of the Macedonians, was the son of Lycaon {Λυκάων}, from the family of Pelasgus {Pelazgos ~ Πελασγός}, who was the mythical first king of Arcadia {Αρκαδία}. According to mythology, Macednus was the son of Zeus {Zefs ~ Ζεύς}.
