Karteria

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

Perseverance {Karteria ~ Καρτερία} was a paddle (driven by revolving wheels like early riverboats) steam corvette (steam and sailing ship) with four masts and schooner rigging (the total number of sails that a ship sails under). She was the first steam powered battle ship that Greece had. She was build at the Brent shipyard in Deptford, England, in 1825. Her first captain was Frank Abney Hastings [People], who contributed a particularly large sum of money to the building of the ship and supervised the work. On the voyage to Greece in July 1826, a fire broke out on board putting the engines out of action. She carried on under sail. She took part in many battles for the Cause before being decommissioned in 1830.
