Chauffeur
Today's chauffeur, more often than not, rides around in air-conditioned comfort, which makes his name from the French chauffer meaning 'to warm up, to heat' seem quite ridiculous.
However, the first chauffeurs in France drove the French equivalent of our Stanley Steamer automobiles and their first task was quite literally to heat the engine until a sufficient head of steam had built up to propel the car.
