Today's chauffeur, more often than not, rides around in air-conditioned comfort, which makes his name — from the French chauffer meaning 'to warm up, to heat' — seem quite ridiculous.
However, the first chauffeurs in France drove the French equivalent of our Stanley Steamer automobiles and their first task was quite literally to heat the engine until a sufficient head of steam had built up to propel the car.
