Leadership In Ancient Greece

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

In Ancient Greece, leading the troops to battle was considered as the utmost honor and this is the reason why only one person had this honor. This person was either the King, or the General. Nobody else, with one exception.

An ordinary citizen could lead the troops to battle, provided that he had earned this privilege. There was only one thing an ordinary citizen should do in order to earn this privilege, and that was to win in the Olympic Games.

Let us not forget that in Ancient Greece, winning in the Olympic Games was equivalent to valour. And this is the reason why the cities of Olympic Winners used to bring down the walls that protected them from their enemies.
